"...Practice within the playroom, will generalize to how your child navigates and copes with experiences in their life."

Play therapy  is a branch of counseling that strategically uses playful strategies to support individuals in navigating a variety of experiences. Play therapy is more than "just playing!" An individualized  treatment plan will be created, catered to the needs of you or, your child.  Therapy will take place in a playroom, which is a strategically thought  out, safe space. The journey through therapy will address several challenges, while also encouraging  the practice and adoption of new skills.

For children, the opportunity to confidently practice within the playroom will generalize to navigating and coping with life experiences. About Building Connections places a strong emphasis on attachment being a cornerstone of a child's development. So, it is very likely that caregiver involvement will be a part of your child's treatment. For adolescents or adults, there are methods of play therapy that can be beneficial in addressing mental health needs.

WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?

  • What if my child is "too old" for the playroom?
Modifications can be implemented for older individuals participating in therapy with us, such as using a different room or teletherapy.
  • What does play therapy look like for an older individual?
Often times, older children initially view the playroom as immature. In time, they are comforted by the warmth of the room and they embrace the concept of therapy. To express themselves, older children usually opt to play board games, engage in crafting or simply talk, while in the playroom. In some cases, there are benefits for an adolescent, who initially resisted the playroom, to continue their therapy within the playroom. Please contact us to learn more.
  • How Does Play Therapy Work?
Play Therapy can help children of all ages (and even adults) cope with difficult emotions and find solutions to problems they may be having. It is beneficial for children who struggle socially or have behavioral issues. Play Therapy gives the child the opportunity to change the way they may feel or think about an issue or problem they are having and as a result come to a resolution or find a solution. Even the most difficult or troubling issues can be resolved through play therapy.
  • Will Play Therapy Work For My Child?
Although every child is different and there is no guarantee it will work for your child, play therapy is implemented as a treatment of choice in mental health settings with clients of all ages. Play Therapy is trauma-informed and recommended for multiple social, emotional or behavioral disorders such as anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity, autism spectrum, oppositional defiant and conduct disorders, anger management, crisis and trauma, grief and loss, divorce and family dissolution, academic and social developmental, and physical and learning disabilities.
